Montreal Trip

Long before European settlement, the island of Montreal was home to Indigenous peoples, including the St. Lawrence Iroquoians who lived in the fortified village of Hochelaga near the base of Mount Royal. The area was visited by French explorer Jacques Cartier in 1535, though permanent European settlement would not come for another century.

Montreal was officially founded in 1642 as Ville-Marie, a missionary settlement established by French colonists led by Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve. Its early years were marked by conflict with surrounding nations and the challenges of survival in a frontier colony. Over time, the settlement grew into a key fur-trading post thanks to its location along the St. Lawrence River, an important route linking the interior of the continent to the Atlantic.

In 1760, during the Seven Years' War, British forces captured Montreal, marking the end of French rule in New France. Under British control, the city expanded rapidly as merchants—many of them Scottish and English—developed Montreal into one of the most important commercial centres in North America.

By the 19th century, Montreal had become Canada’s economic powerhouse. Infrastructure projects like the Lachine Canal helped ships bypass dangerous rapids on the St. Lawrence and encouraged the growth of factories, railways, and trade. For much of this period, Montreal was the largest city in Canada and served briefly as the capital of the Province of Canada in the 1840s.

In the 20th century, Montreal became known for its vibrant arts and cultural life. The city hosted the Expo 67, a landmark event during Canada’s centennial celebrations, and later the 1976 Summer Olympics. While Toronto eventually surpassed it economically and in population, Montreal remained the cultural heart of French-speaking North America.

Today, Montreal is celebrated for its bilingual character, historic neighbourhoods like Old Montreal, world-class festivals, and its unique blend of European and North American influences—making it one of Canada’s most distinctive and dynamic cities.
