Status Non Status
Status Non-Status is an Indigenous alternative-rock band from Canada known for blending sharp lyricism, social commentary, and powerful storytelling. The group features Adam Sturgeon, also known for his work in the rock band WHOOP-Szo, alongside producer and collaborator Shawn Bernard.
The project explores themes of Indigenous identity, colonial history, and contemporary life in Canada. The name “Status Non-Status” references the legal classifications created by the Indian Act, which historically determined who was recognized as a “status” First Nations person under Canadian law.
Their debut album, Warrior Down (2022), received widespread critical acclaim and earned the Polaris Music Prize in 2022, one of Canada’s most prestigious honours for artistic merit in music. The group’s work is noted for its bold political voice and its fusion of rock with Indigenous perspectives and storytelling traditions.
