JS Ondara

J.S. Ondara is a Grammy-nominated Kenyan-born singer-songwriter known for his rich, folk-inspired sound and thoughtful storytelling. Born in Nairobi, Kenya, Ondara grew up listening to American and British rock and folk music, including Bob Dylan, whose work inspired him to pursue music and eventually move to the United States after winning the green card lottery in 2013.

Settling in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he taught himself guitar and began performing at small venues, drawing attention for his evocative voice and reflective songwriting. Ondara’s debut album, Tales of America (2019), explores life, identity, and the immigrant experience, earning widespread praise and a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album.

His music blends elements of folk, Americana, and lyrical storytelling, and he has toured internationally, including opening for artists such as Lindsey Buckingham, Neil Young, and The Lumineers.
