Generation Axe
Generation Axe is a touring live show that brings together several of the world’s top electric guitarists for one night of virtuoso performances, collaborations, and guitar-driven spectacle. The concept is simple but powerful: assemble a lineup of elite guitar players from different styles of rock and metal, let each perform their own set, and then bring them together on stage for unforgettable jam sessions.
The tour was created by legendary guitarist Steve Vai, who envisioned an event where audiences could experience multiple guitar heroes in a single concert. Since its debut in 2016, Generation Axe tours have featured rotating lineups of internationally renowned players such as Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Nuno Bettencourt, Tosin Abasi, and Eric Johnson.
A typical Generation Axe concert unfolds in three main parts:
1. Individual Sets
Each guitarist performs a short solo set with their band, showcasing their unique style — from shredding metal solos to blues-influenced improvisation.
2. Guest Appearances
During these sets, the guitarists often join each other on stage for collaborative performances, trading solos and riffs.
3. The Grand Finale
The highlight of the night is when all the guitarists perform together in a massive jam session, often playing classic rock covers or extended instrumental pieces. These finales can feature multiple simultaneous solos and playful “guitar battles.”
What makes Generation Axe unique is the combination of styles and personalities on one stage. Each guitarist brings a different musical language:
neoclassical shredding
blues-rock phrasing
progressive metal technique
classic hard rock riffs
For guitar fans, it’s essentially a masterclass in electric guitar performance.
The name “Generation Axe” is a play on words:
“Axe” is slang for a guitar.
“Generation” refers to multiple generations of guitar heroes performing together.
The result is part concert, part clinic, and part celebration of guitar culture.
